Debut Launch of the Soyuz TMA-M Spacecraft

Russia will launch the latest version of its historic Soyuz system this afternoon with the window opening at 4:10 PM Phoenix time on 7 October 2010 (23:10 UTC). Local time at the Baikonur launch site in Kazakstan is 5:10 AM on 8 October 2010.

We will post updates as the day progresses.

Three flight tests are scheduled:

  • flight development test – Soyuz TMA-M MTV (TMA-01M)
  • flight development test – Soyuz TMA-02M MTV
  • qualification test – Soyuz TMA-03M MTV

Objectives include:

  • Testing of automated operation modes during a nominal flight program
  • Testing of manual systems in the event of off-nominal operation of the automated systems
  • – attitude control in the orbital coordinate system when using the manual attitude control mode
  • – fly-around the ISS in the manual attitude control mode
  • – issue of orbital maneuvering pulses using four berthing and attitude thrusters

The primary crew includes Alexander Kaleri (Roscosmos), Oleg Skripochka (Roscosmos), Scott Kelly (NASA) on Soyuz TMA-01M, and backup crew members include Sergey Volkov, Oleg Kononenko and Ronald Garan.
