Dawn devoted most of September to working its way down from the 2,700-kilometer survey orbit to its current altitude of about 680 kilometers, and changing the orientation of the orbit. Now four times closer to the surface, the probe is nearly ready for an even more comprehensive exploration from the high altitude mapping orbit (HAMO).
