What is your vision for space? Have your say!

We are running a survey to find out what is the youth visions for the next 50 years of space. The results will be presented by two Space Generation representatives at a planning workshop including prominent individuals such as Freeman Dyson, Elon Musk and Dr Harrison Schmitt. The workshop will be held in conjunction with a conference titled, “The Future of Space Exploration: Solutions to Earthly Problems?”, taking place on April 12-14 2007.

The input sought at this time are key events and timing that are thought to be important for space activities over the next 50 years. We hope to capture the input in a publication tentatively titled: “Looking Back, Looking Forward: The Next Generation’s 50-Year Vision for Space”.

To provide your input, please visit http://www.spacegeneration.org/survey/survey.php?id=4QG3M1AF

This survey is organised by SGAC, in partnership with the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, the Boston University Center for Space Physics, and the Secure World Foundation.

FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR TWO REPRESENTATIVES

UNDING AVAILABLE FOR TWO REPRESENTATIVES

Travel expenses will be available for two young people to attend a space planning workshop including prominent individuals such as Freeman Dyson, Elon Musk and Dr Harrison Schmitt. The workshop will be held in conjunction with a conference titled, “The Future of Space Exploration: Solutions to Earthly Problems?”, taking place on April 12-14 2007.

The selection of the two youth representatives will be based on volunteer contributions to the planning and execution of a survey on the topic “Key Events for the next 50 years”. The youth volunteers will be asked to participate in the survey processing, and the writing of the report. The top two contributors to this process will be selected and funded to travel to the workshop. To be eligible you must be between 18 and 29 years old on 12 April 2007.

Space Pioneer Day & Yuri’s Night 2007

Whereas outer space represents the next great frontier for human exploration; and,

Whereas hundreds of men and women have risked their lives in opening the frontier of space for all humanity; and,

Whereas some of these brave individuals died in the pursuit of knowledge and exploration; and,

Whereas no state or national holiday exists to honor the spirit of exploration and knowledge and selflessness that characterizes those space explorers who continue to risk their lives for the betterment of their world; and,

Whereas the United Nations’ “World Space Week” is based on the technological achievement of the launch of the first artificial satellite, Sputnik, and the signing of the U.N. Space Treaty, not any human accomplishment in space; and,

Whereas April 12 is both the anniversary of the first launch of the Space Shuttle with John Young and Bob Crippen in 1981 and the launch of Yuri Gagarin, the first human into space, in 1961; and,

Whereas the celebration of the individual astronauts, engineers, and others who have made possible the exploration of space would provide inspiration for the youth of the State of Florida and the United States of America to pursue careers in science, engineering, technology, and mathematics;

We therefore decree from this day forward that April 12 will be celebrated as Space Pioneer Day.

MIT OpenCourseWare: a great resource!

Thought this site may be of interest to many of you. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has been making their courses available online to the public for a little over 5 years via their MITOpenCourseWare initiative, but the past year has seen a surge of interest.

What is OCW? From the OCW pages…

“…MIT OCW is a large-scale, Web-based publication of the educational materials from the MIT faculty’s courses. This unique initiative enables the open sharing of the MIT faculty’s teaching materials with educators, enrolled students, and self-learners around the world. MIT OCW provides users with open access to the syllabi, lecture notes, course calendars, problem sets and solutions, exams, reading lists, even a selection of video lectures, from 1400 MIT courses representing 34 departments and all five of MIT’s schools. The initiative will include materials from 1800 courses by the year 2008.”

Chapter Annual Reports

In order to maintain standing as an NSS chapter, both US and international chapters need to file a report with the organization every year; the reporting deadline is February 15th. NSS Affiliates may also file information reports using the form below.

Although we are striving to have a standard filing form, at this time the forms on this page are for your convenience and are not mandatory for the 2005 filing year [due on February 15, 2006].

Reports should be submitted by email to the vice president for chapters, the regional coordinator(s) for your chapter, and to NSS headquarters; for chapters reporting financial information (US chapters that do not file separately with the IRS) a paper copy to NSS headquarters is also required. The most recent contact information for the chapters vice president, chapters support at NSS headquarters, and your regional coordinators is available on the chapter coordinators page. NSS Headquarters can be reached at:

National Space Society
1620 I (Eye) Street NW, Suite 615
Washington, DC 20006, USA
FAX: (202) 463-8497
EMAIL: nsshq@nss.org

Chapter reports must include updated contact information for your chapter, any changes to your bylaws, and financial information covering the previous calendar year for chapters that do not file separately from NSS. They should also include a list or description of activities for the past year and a count of chapter membership, and may include a full list of members. Any other information chapters wish to regularly report to NSS should also be included in the report.

Chapters are encouraged to make use of the following forms for their reports:
